Candelen at 50:
Rooted in Community, Ready for the Future

For more than 50 years, Candelen has stood alongside the parents, caregivers, and educators who nurture young children during the most important years of development. While much has changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to strengthening the adults who care for and educate young children so that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Like many enduring organizations, Candelen has evolved to meet the changing needs of Arizona's families and communities. In recent years, that evolution has included changes in executive leadership, the development of a new strategic plan, the refinement of our focus areas, and a renewed clarity around our mission and values. We embraced a new name and brand that better reflects who we are today, while honoring the legacy that brought us here. Along the way, we have thoughtfully sunset programs that no longer aligned with community needs and launched innovative new initiatives designed to meet families where they are.

A Message from Our CEO

Rob Podlogar

Rob Podlogar
Chief Executive Officer

As we celebrate another season of growth and impact, I am inspired by the resilience and dedication of the families we serve. Early childhood is a critical time in a child's life, and together we are helping ensure that children across Arizona can learn, grow, and succeed. Candelen’s work would not be possible without the support of our partners, funders, employees, and community members. Thank you for investing in stronger families and brighter futures.

This year Candelen celebrates our 50th Anniversary in community. We began in 1976 with a sole purpose of “monitoring and providing technical assistance for child day care centers”. We have grown over time and broadened our reach throughout the state. In honor of our 50 years of service, Candelen will be hosting a Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) Summit on October 1st, a special event where a panel of state and national experts, alongside local FFN caregivers will help us deepen our understanding of how we can best support the vital role of informal caregivers. The FFN Summit celebrates five decades of Candelen's commitment to strengthening families and caregivers and reaffirms our dedication to supporting the family, friend, and neighbor caregivers who play such a vital role in children's early learning and development.

I look forward to using this newsletter as a source to provide you updates on our collective work and progress.

Best,
Rob Podlogar
CEO

Candelen’s Kith & Kin Program: Angie’s Story

Angie's StoryPlay

Twenty years ago, Angélica Pérez moved to the United States from Mexico. Since then, she has dedicated her life to caring for children. Known simply as “Angie” to the families she serves, she has built deep bonds with the children in her care and earned the trust of their parents through her compassion, patience, and commitment.

Although she never had children of her own, Angie says the love she receives from the children she cares for is one of life's greatest gifts. "Even though they aren't my children, they call me 'Mom,'" she says.

Through weekly sessions, practical resources, and conversations with other caregivers, Maria discovered new strategies to support her children's learning and development. She also found a community that understood her challenges and celebrated her successes.

Program Highlights

Prenatal & Postpartum Program

One Person. Two Kinds of Support. Every Step of the Way.

Doula-Parent Educator, Shannon, holds participant's newborn baby, Truett.

Pregnancy is a season of learning and preparation. Candelen's Prenatal & Postpartum Program meets expectant families in this window with something truly one-of-a-kind.

Meet the Doula-Parent Educator; the best of both worlds.

Each family is paired with a Doula-Parent Educator, trained as both a certified parent educator and a doula, offering compassionate support through pregnancy, labor, postpartum, and guidance through baby's first year. Families across Maricopa County can join as early as pregnancy confirmation, up to 32 weeks' gestation, with services delivered at home.

Whether it's a family's first baby or their fourth, Candelen offers culturally responsive prenatal education on what to expect during pregnancy, labor, and birth. Trained doulas provide steady support through delivery, followed by hands-on postpartum care and parent education through baby's first year, so families feel confident and empowered every step of the way.

Candelen's Prenatal & Postpartum Program means families never face pregnancy, birth, or those first tender months alone; the same trusted doula-parent educator is by their side throughout.

Kith & Kin Program

Honoring the Caregivers Who Show Up with Love

Caregivers celebrate their Kith & Kin Program graduation in North Phoenix.

Behind every working parent, there's often someone else quietly holding it all together: a grandmother, an aunt, a neighbor. These Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) caregivers are some of the most important, and most overlooked, people in a child's early life. Candelen's Kith & Kin Program is built for them.

Over 12 weeks, FFN caregivers join a warm, supportive community to learn and grow together, building real confidence and hands-on skills for nurturing, high-quality care at home.

Along the way, they earn free CPR and First Aid certification, plus the tools and confidence to create safe, enriching spaces for young children. Because raising a child well takes a village, and every member of it deserves to feel ready for the job.

Participants learn about Nutrition from specialist Carmen Guerrero in Buckeye.

Caregivers explore and learn about:

  • Language and literacy
  • Brain development
  • Daily routines
  • Nutrition and healthy habits
  • Positive behavior strategies that work
  • CPR & First Aid

Grandparents. Aunts and uncles. Older siblings. Family friends. Neighbors who show up with love. They are the quiet backbone of early childhood, nurturing the relationships that help children learn, grow, and thrive. As we look ahead, Candelen remains committed to walking beside these caregivers every step of the way, because when caregivers are supported, children and communities succeed.

Licensing & Certification Program

Turning a Regulatory Maze into a Launchpad

For many FFN caregivers, becoming a licensed child care provider can feel like a maze. Candelen's Licensing & Certification Program turns that barrier into a bridge toward something bigger.

Candelen walks alongside caregivers through every step toward licensure or certification, with one-on-one support tailored to their circumstances. They walk away with the tools to launch and grow a successful child care business, with increased earning potential and long-term professional growth.

This program isn't just about checking regulatory boxes; every caregiver who becomes licensed opens doors to greater opportunity, and greater access to quality care for families who need it most.

With nearly 50 years in the child care field, Candelen meets every caregiver exactly where they are, making each step easier to navigate.

Why Our Work Matters

Every child's first teacher isn't found in a classroom. It's the caregiver who rocks them to sleep, the parent who guides their infant's growth and discovery during the first year of life, and the home-based provider who welcomes them each day with open arms.

At Candelen, we build our work around a simple truth: empowered caregivers create empowered children.

From pregnancy through a child's earliest years, caregivers lay the foundation for lifelong learning, health, and success. Through Candelen's family support programs, home-based child care initiatives, professional development, coaching, mentorship, and advocacy efforts, we equip caregivers, parents, and educators with the tools they need to help children thrive.

While each program serves a unique purpose, they share one goal: strengthening the adults who shape a child's earliest experiences. The impact is powerful. One parent gains confidence. One caregiver builds a thriving business. One educator strengthens their practice. One child gets a brighter start. And when children flourish, entire communities, now and for the future, grow stronger.

Supporting Candelen means investing in the people who are shaping tomorrow's leaders, learners, and changemakers today.
