For more than 50 years, Candelen has stood alongside the parents, caregivers, and educators who nurture young children during the most important years of development. While much has changed over the decades, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to strengthening the adults who care for and educate young children so that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Like many enduring organizations, Candelen has evolved to meet the changing needs of Arizona’s families and communities. In recent years, that evolution has included changes in executive leadership, the development of a new strategic plan, the refinement of our focus areas, and a renewed clarity around our mission and values. We embraced a new name and brand that better reflects who we are today, while honoring the legacy that brought us here. Along the way, we have thoughtfully sunset programs that no longer aligned with community needs and launched innovative new initiatives designed to meet families where they are.
What has guided every step of this evolution is Candelen’s belief that communities themselves are the experts in what they need. For five decades, we have listened carefully, adapted intentionally, and built programs that reflect the values, priorities, cultures, and aspirations of the families we serve. That commitment to community partnership defines who we are today and will continue to guide the next 50 years of our work.

Today, an incredible thread of connection runs through all of Candelen’s programs. Whether we are supporting an expectant parent preparing to welcome a new baby, a grandparent caring for young children while parents work, or a caregiver taking the next step toward becoming a licensed child care provider, our focus remains the same: empowering the adults who shape a child’s earliest experiences.
Candelen’s Prenatal & Postpartum Program begins this journey during pregnancy, a unique and powerful time when families are preparing for birth, parenting, and the exciting changes ahead. Through the support of a Doula Parent Educator, families receive compassionate guidance throughout pregnancy, labor, postpartum recovery, and their baby’s first year, helping them build confidence and knowledge from the very beginning.
As children grow, Candelen’s Kith & Kin Program supports Family, Friend, and Neighbor caregivers, the trusted adults who provide care every day while parents are at work. Through free education, materials, and personalized support, caregivers gain tools and skills that create safe, nurturing, and enriching environments where children can learn and flourish.
For caregivers interested in expanding their role and impact, Candelen’s Licensing & Certification Program provides a pathway toward professional growth. Through culturally responsive resources, individualized guidance, and hands-on support, caregivers are equipped to navigate the licensing and certification process with confidence. By transforming licensing from a barrier into a bridge, we help caregivers access new opportunities while expanding the availability of high-quality child care for families across Arizona.
The connection between these programs is clear. Each one strengthens the adults who care for young children, creating a continuum of support that begins before birth and grows alongside families and caregivers throughout a child’s early years. Together, they represent Candelen’s belief that when we invest in caregivers, we invest in children, families, and entire communities.
As we celebrate 50 years of impact, we also look ahead with excitement and purpose. Our history is a story of listening, learning, and evolving in partnership with the communities we serve. The foundation is strong, the need is great, and the opportunities ahead are inspiring.
After 50 years of supporting Arizona’s youngest children and the adults who care for them, we’re proud of how far we’ve come. But more importantly, we’re energized by what comes next. Candelen is not simply celebrating a milestone. We’re building the future. And in many ways, we’re just getting started!
